feel welcome into the village, but at the same time
I felt it was equally important that I made an e†ort
to be included too,” Pam says.
As we wander around the village, oohing and
ahhing at the upgraded community centre, the
spectacular library and seniors’ priced hair salon,
it becomes clear that Pam is a cherished member
of Keperra Sanctuary. Pam is friendly with everyone
we walk past, remembering to ask how their visit
with the family went, or reminding them that the
weekly fresh food markets were on that morning.
You may think Pam has her hands full spending
time with her §ve children and 12 grandkids, but her
busy schedule doesn’t stop there. Currently putting
together the village’s annual fashion parade, Pam
also spends her time volunteering at her church
and the local Vinnie’s store.
Pam’s favourite part of retirement living? Next to
watching her grandkids play sport, Pam lives for
her morning ‘water ballet’ and her community.
“I really enjoy being part of something bigger,
like a tribe where we’re all connected in some way,
whether it be an activity together, a quiet cup
of tea or heading out to the theatre,”
she smiles.
After spending most of her adult life moving around
Central Queensland for her late husband’s career,
Pam Hill, 69, decided Brisbane’s Keperra Sanctuary
would be her place to call home.
The decision to move closer to her children
and grandchildren was made when Pam lost her
husband and promised herself she would always
remain active.
And so Brisbane became her new home at the age
of 57. Since then, Pam has been true to her word
in every way.
Rarely a day goes by where Pam doesn’t leave
her home, see a friend or chat to someone on
the phone.
“When I moved to Brisbane, I didn’t know anybody
other than my family. I was immediately made to
