Page 34-35 - Inside Darling Quarter

Along the western Tumbalong
Park frontage, a generous timber
lined canopy gives shelter to
retail activities for both families
and commercial users. The
western façade is a warm,
articulated screen of timber
shades and blinds that provide
a considered scale and image to
Darling Harbour.
The ground plane retail precinct
reflects the image of the overall
building at a more intimate
scale by using a variety of timber
elements and a seamless and
varied transition between the
public exterior spaces and
the interior.
A decisive connection between
the commercial buildings extends
pedestrian access from the city
to Darling Harbour and
establishes a clear hierarchy of
movement and entry.
The buildings form a two-part
ensemble of campus styled
commercial buildings on a base
of retail activities to enliven the
ground plane. The stepped form
of the city is continued in the
building form with the city-scale
buildings fronting Harbour Street
and lower scale forms fronting
the valley floor of the city at
Tumbalong Park.
The roofs create an elegant
transition between the upper
and lower forms and provide a
unique profile that marks the
importance of the central atria
within the development. From
Harbour Street, doubled height
commercial lobbies are positioned
to allow access to two light filled
contemporary workplace buildings
to the north and south of the
civic connector.
