Lendlease Resident Rewards launches Residents in 71 retirement living villages across Australia can now take advantage of the new Lendlease Residents Rewards program. Launched in December last year, the program provides residents with access to discounted offers from thousands of national and local outlets. The offers span many categories including savings on e-gift cards, movie tickets, experiences, travel, restaurants, groceries, and health and well-being. “We’re always looking for ways to support our residents and help them thrive, and this program helps by saving dollars when buying for themselves or buying gifts for others,” says Tony Randello, Lendlease Retirement Living Managing Director. “The cost is covered by Lendlease as a way of thanking our residents for being part of the community.” Participating national partners include Woolworths, Coles, Priceline, David Jones, Event Cinemas, Dymocks and many more. Increasingly, local retailers such as cafes, restaurants, pharmacies and clubs are also signing up. More discounts are on the way! Stitches with heart If you’re a dab hand at knitting or sewing and everyone you know has a few too many garments to prove it, Wrap With Love wants to hear from you. This not‑for‑profit organisation, founded in 1992, provides warm wraps to the homeless community and other vulnerable groups. This non-denominational organisation has given out more than 400,000 wraps to people in more than 75 countries since its inception, stitching together squares knitted by volunteers. A fantastic achievement given it’s entirely run by generous friends who believe in the cause. Whether you have time to knit just one square (a full blanket comprises 28), a whole blanket or even many blankets, Wrap With Love needs your help. You can knit as part of a group (they hold regular groups across the year) or from home – just start knitting! For more information, go to wrapwithlove.org . How does a high-fashion aesthetic translate into a children’s book? For Australian fashion icon Linda Jackson, the native bushlands of her childhood have never ceased to teach and inspire. Jackson is an Officer of the Order of Australia, an interior designer and a long-time collaborator with Jenny Kee, another iconic Australian fashion designer. Now, at 68 years old, like many people of her generation, Jackson is busy adding a new accomplishment to her list: children’s book author. Fashion fans who’ve seen her vivid Bush Couture collection (archived by the National Gallery of Australia) will recognise Jackson’s signature use of colour and pattern to tell the story of the Rainbow Menagerie . The beautiful book is inspired by Jackson’s wanderings in the Australian outback, and clearly illustrates the artist’s passion for the bush. “My bush studio became the basis of many of the stories based on the lyrebirds, wallabies, wombats and king parrots that I made friends with there,” she says. Using paper collage, Jackson introduces a new generation of readers to iconic Australian animals and our vast, varied bush landscapes. Perfect for the grandkids, it’s one to keep on your shelf for when the little ones visit. Linda Jackson’s Rainbow Menagerie , Scribble, $24.99 RRP. Available at all good book stores. Colourful Country Ahead of the game Keen to play lawn bowls like a champion? It may be as simple as adopting a pre-performance ritual. Deakin University’s Centre for Sport Research discovered that the successful shots of elite-level players are often set up long before they release the bowl, while the key to excelling lies in the mind just as much as it does in the body. Try these techniques to master the green. ❶ Prepare Think back to the moment you bowled your best. What did you do first? What were you thinking about at the time? Researcher Dr Fraser Carson says the best way to find consistency is to develop a reliable pre-game routine that works for you. “Pick up the bowl, set your feet and take a deep breath,” he says. Once you’re in the zone, “Use internal self-encouragement comments such as: ‘You’ve got this’ or repeat a key word such as ‘smooth’.” It’s all about being positive. ❷ Breathe Sometimes the simplest advice is the most effective. As you set up your shot, “Breathe in and count to five, hold the breath for five, breathe out for five,” says Carson. This relaxation technique will clear your mind of unwanted stimuli, helping you focus on the task at hand: to impress your fellow players and nail the shot. ❸ Concentrate No lawn bowls game is free from distraction. The solution? Improve your concentration. Carson suggests improving mental performance by using “non-sport ideas, such as concentration grids or downloading an app to practice every day.” While on the green, he suggests you “develop a specific cue word that reminds you to focus.” Think mind over matter. ❹ Rehearse The best place to prepare for a game of bowls? Inside your head. Carson recommends players “practise a few times a week by having a mental relaxation and rehearsal session, visualising skills you want to improve on and seeing yourself execute them,” he says. “This process is a way to cope with stress and improve self confidence in your capabilities.” If you can dream it and put your mind to it, you can do it.
