The Elliot Springs Voice - Summer 2021

Did you know that Yellow Crazy Ants are an invasive species to Australia, particularly in Queensland’s Wet Tropics? They are listed as one of the world’s 100 worst invasive alien species, and one of the world’s worst tramp ants. They can have adverse environmental, agricultural and social impacts and are a serious threat to native wildlife. They also give an extremely nasty bite. It is very important if you see them you report them so early action can be taken. What do they look like? • .Yellow to brownish ant with long and slender body (approximately 5mm long) •. Abdomen is dark brown, sometimes striped • Legs and antennae are very long • Walking style is erratic. Townsville City Council recently heli-baited for Yellow Crazy Ants over the vacant land just outside Elliot Springs. Important to note that the bait used is not harmful to humans or animals. This water storage facility will be essential for the community to grow and overall expansion of Townsville. Located about 200m up the Bindal Ridge along the existing walking track, the tank needs to be elevated to assist with water pressure. Large pipes will connect the tank to the existing Townsville City Council and Elliot Springs infrastructure by creating a vast water network. These works are expected to start in January 2022 and run until October 2022. With safety as a priority to Lendlease, the Bindal Ridge walking track and mountain bike trail will unfortunately be closed during the duration of works. We will however use this closure to improve existing tracks and create new ones. Works to construct a new water reservoir will see temporary changes to the Bindal Ridge track
