Spring Winter 2022 Newsletter

What a year it has been so far for Springfield Rise, all of the residents, local groups and organisations that make our colourful community so special! From the announcement of the Springfield Rise Community Grants recipients, to our neighbourly barbecue and movie night in Ben Nevis Park, it is clear that we are all united by a collective vision to live well in Springfield Rise. If the past few months have shown anything, it's that the people make the place. From the dedication of the Sustainability Squad at Springfield Central State School, to the legends at Outside the Locker Room raising awareness for mental health, the people of Greater Springfield truly are what make this region so spectacular! If you have any questions about the events or initiatives covered in this newsletter, or are looking for a way to get involved, you can reach us via email at springfieldrisecommunity@lendlease.com Hello, Springfield Risers! Never underestimate the planet-saving power of 25 students led by a teacher who is ultra-passionate about sustainability. The Sustainability Squad at Springfield Central State School was established in 2017 by Design and Technologies Teacher, Helen Desic, to create sustainable measures around the school and inspire students to lead an eco-friendlier lifestyle. Made up primarily of year five and six students, the Squad meets every Wednesday at lunchtime to plan sustainability fundraisers, brainstorm ideas and work on ongoing green projects. This year, the group has a variety of sustainability projects on the go or planned – including native beehives, regular ‘nude food’ days, the OzHarvest Cooking Feast Program and a soon-to-be-installed solar-powered compost garden, supported by a Lendlease Junior Landcare Grant. Through their recent ‘Wear Green for Squad!’ fundraiser, students were able to raise funds for a social enterprise that assists people experiencing homelessness and vulnerable people/families. While the Sustainability Squad is a big extracurricular commitment, Helen said it’s driven by the passion and determination of the brilliant students who choose to be part of it. Sustainability made simple with Springfield Central’s super squad! The Sustainability Squad in action
