Barangaroo South Sustainability Report 2021 - 2023

Carbon Neutrality Breathes Life into Forests Led by INSW, all carbon offsets at Barangaroo come from state-sourced regeneration projects, establishing native forests that contribute to greater biodiversity and benefit communities. This is on top of the Large- scale Generation certificates sourced to offset Scope 2 emissions for the precinct*. * (Except for Crown Sydney, who have used Australian Nature based offsets as well as LGCs to achieve carbon neutrality in Scope 2 for FY23). Our carbon offset programs include: Poon Boon Regeneration Project, New South Wales Flourishing vegetation and the regeneration of land and soil is just the beginning at Poon Boon, where permanent native forests have been established on land that previously struggled to thrive. Prior to the project commencing, vegetation growth had been suppressed for at least ten years, however assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources, including rootstock and lignotubers, has seen the land prosper. In addition to its carbon reducing imperatives, the project strives to achieve quantifiable benefits to the environment and community. A focus on sustainable livestock production through long-term soil and vegetation regeneration will increase the capacity of the land to support biodiversity. As a result of the actions being taken, and the native forests being established there will be a continuous and enduring process of capturing and storing carbon dioxide and reducing harmful emissions, leading to ongoing positive impacts on reducing carbon in the atmosphere, long into the future. Curraweena Regeneration Project, New South Wales Situated next to a regional National Park, which increases the habitat area for native flora and fauna, the Curraweena Regeneration Project establishes permanent native forests on land that previously has been cleared and had regrowth suppressed for at least a decade. The project assists regeneration through altering land management practices to relieve grazing, mechanical and chemical pressure often exerted on regenerating vegetation under typical farming practices, delivering consistent permanent sequestration and abatement into the future. Kenilworth Regrowth Project, New South Wales This project establishes permanent native forests through assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources on land that was cleared of vegetation and where regrowth was suppressed for at least 10 years prior to the project having commenced.
