Barangaroo South Sustainability Report 2021 - 2023

Pictured: Maggot Farm by Goterra installed at the shared basement in Barangaroo South. Maggot farm creates new future for food Barangaroo South’s maggot farm was established in 2020 and up until December of 2023, it had processed over 420 tonnes of food waste, resulting in a whopping 800 tonnes of CO2e being avoided. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Barangaroo South generated around 60 tonnes of food waste each month, sending it to specialised off-site facilities for anaerobic digestion into fertiliser and energy. In NSW, processing food waste is relatively expensive, incurring fees for compactor hire, collection, weighbridge tonnage rates and waste contractor services. Goterra has pioneered a novel process that uses robotics and insect larvae, or maggots, to convert food waste into fertiliser and animal feed. The process harnesses the natural cycles of the Black Soldier Fly – an insect found all over the world. In the larval stage, the maggots voraciously eat through food scraps and compostable packaging. The shipping container ‘farm’ is then emptied every 12 days –well before the maggots turn into flies. The process generates two valuable new products: well-balanced fertiliser; and high-protein, high-fat maggots used in animal feed, such as for chicken and fish. Lendlease, supported by the JLL Shared Services team and our investment partners, trialled the installation of a maggot farm at Barangaroo South to test whether operational food waste could be processed on site with reduced greenhouse gas emissions and without unpleasant odours. The trial was highly successful, and the maggot farm is now a part of Barangaroo South’s waste management processes. The initiative has attracted significant interest from industry and property groups.
