Barangaroo South Sustainability Report 2021 - 2023
The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) prepares comprehensive assessment reports detailing knowledge on climate change, its causes, potential impacts and response options. Our changing climate At the UN Climate Change Conference Agreement (COM21) where the Paris Agreement Treaty was adopted, with some 196 countries agreeing that it was vital that we worked together to bring global warming to below 2°C and as close to 1.5°C as possible. Beyond this threshold, it is understood that system-wide ecological collapse is likely, with catastrophic implications for the natural world and global communities. In March 2023, the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the AR6 Synthesis Report: Climate Change 2023. Considered the most comprehensive study ever conducted on climate change by an intergovernmental body, the 8,000-page report summarises eight years of meticulous research conducted by hundreds of leading climate scientists to provide policymakers, communities, businesses and individuals with the most up-to-date data on climate change. It’s the starkest warning yet, detailing the devastating impact of rising greenhouse gas emissions and the catastrophic consequences this could have on the planet, unless immediate action is taken. If greenhouse gases continue to increase at the current level, Earth’s global temperature will rise an additional 4°C by the end of the century, triggering a cascade of cataclysmic events including rising temperatures, declining global food stocks, extreme weather and rising sea-level. According to the report, all global modelled pathways that limit warming to 1.5°C and those that limit warming to 2°C involve rapid and immediate greenhouse gas emissions reductions, in all sectors, this decade. There is still time to limit warming to 1.5°C but only if we take drastic and immediate action. It is abundantly clear that the effects of climate change will remain a primary issue now and into the future, impacting the way we design, build and maintain our communities in response.
