Barangaroo South Sustainability Report 2021 - 2023

DELIVERING ON Pictured: Mural at One Sydney Harbour construction site created by Merindah Funnell. A Meaningful Mural “My artwork proudly celebrates the longest living society on earth and my strong connection to it through my upbringing in community. Entangled with strong line work, bold colours, and a depth of layers, my artwork is influenced by the respect and love for our land and its diverse nature and animals.” —Merindah Funnell In September 2022, the Barangaroo workspace became the scene of an extraordinary artistic endeavour, orchestrated by Merindah Funnell, a renowned Tubba-Gah artist from the Wiradjuri Nation, well known for her captivating murals. Collaborating closely with Lendlease’s First Nations team members, Merindah facilitated a unique workshop featuring Gadigal Leader, Uncle Paul Newman, who imparted invaluable local cultural knowledge to the participants. The workshop included a reflective journey to Barangaroo Reserve where participants connected with the natural elements around them. Water emerged as a shared theme, alongside other elemental symbols like sandstone, trees, sun, sky, and clouds.  Drawing inspiration from this immersive experience, Merindah conceptualised a mural to serve as a welcoming tableau for not just Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples onsite, but also for non- First Nations staff and visitors. The mural aims to be a celebration and acknowledgment of the rich cultural tapestry of this land. This collaborative artwork stands as another commitment by Lendlease to honour and celebrate First Nations culture, art and history.
