Alkimos Voice Summer 2020

Alkimos Beach resident and mother of two, Chaselle, has been the Club Captain of Alkimos Surf Life Saving Club since 2019 and won last season’s Life Saver of the Year. We recently had a chat with her to ask about the role she plays and how she got into it. Tell me about your role as club captain “This role is new to the club and we are currently exploring how it can best serve the club. It is a very front facing role - each week I am down on the beach, managing the patrol volunteers, encouraging members to volunteer, attending expos and more. The vision is to help make surf club membership more appealing to a broad audience and be a role model for members”. How did you get into the role? “I used to be that mum who who sat on the beach watching my kids every weekend. Being from the UK, I always had the desire to conquer the ocean. After taking up running, I started feeling a lot fitter and healthier and decided to do my Bronze Medallion on offer for free as a Club member. Once I completed Bronze Medallion with a few friends and next thing I knew I was in the water and doing things I would normally be scared of. Before long I was on patrol, out on the boards and watching my kids flourish in the program and at the same time seeing them shocked that I could do it too.” Do you enjoy being Club Captain? “I love doing the beach patrols and helping build the number of volunteer lifeguards. I also completed the inflatable rescue boat crew training, which battered my body, but I absolutely loved it. People ask me how I manage to do it and how terrifying it seems, but I try to explain how anyone can be involved. I want people to participate as much or little as they like. The possibilities are endless and don’t have to be water based.” “The role as Club Captain has developed my people management skills by leading the patrol volunteers. It’s such a diverse group with adult men, women and teenagers. With the help of others, I oversee and manage the resourcing, plus ensure all the equipment is ready to go when and if needed.” This year SLSWA celebrates 40 years of Women in Surf. What does that mean to you? “I always had the thought that surf life-saving was a guy’s thing and was male dominated. At Alkimos SLSC we have a lot of female members and many are bronze medallion holders with more coming through every day. I can’t believe women have only been on the beach for 40 years with everything we have to offer. A proud moment was the final beach patrol of last season which was an all-female patrol roster”. “Being involved in a Surf Club isn’t just about patrols. There are parents who are nurses who help us by checking and updating the first aid kits, or people organising events and activities.” Meet the Alkimos SLSC captain, Chaselle SURF SEASON RETURNS Alkimos Surf Life Saving Club have launched their new 2020/21 Surf Season with their Registration and Open Day’s taking place back in September.
