Alkimos Voice Summer 2020

A NEW CHAPTER FOR ST JAMES’ ANGLICAN SCHOOL St James’ Anglican School continues to grow from strength to strength, with the recent unveiling of a new Trade Centre. With breathtaking ocean views from the second story, the Trade Centre will provide endless opportunities for the school’s ‘Orange Army’. Along with an outdoor classroom and café, the Centre will encompass Design Technology, Information Technology, Metalwork, Food Technology, Photography and Art. The new facilities will give students more opportunities for hands-on learning, further enriching the St James’ curriculum. In addition to ATAR and General pathways, St James’ can now provide work-ready and trade qualifications for Senior School students. The completion of the Trade Centre coincides with the next phase of growth at St James’ as the School welcomes the first cohort of Year 12 students in 2021. These young adults will not only receive an excellent education but the life skills that are required to face a challenging world. To book a tour or for any further information, please contact enrolments@stjames.wa.edu.au or call 6336 8330. NAIDOC WEEK 2020 This year, NAIDOC Week celebrations will be held between 8 – 15 November. The 2020 theme of ‘Always Was, Always Will Be” recognises that First Nations people have occupied this continent for over 65,000 years. We are in the process of planning activities but would love to hear if you have a big idea to help celebrate NAIDOC Week. Visit naidoc.org.au for more information. DISMANTLE PROGRAM TEACHES LOCAL STUDENTS JOB SKILLS A group of Year 10 students at St James’ Anglican School recently got their hands dirty with bike repair and upcycle program that provides workforce development opportunities. BikeRescue is an award- winning accredited program delivered by Dismantle Inc. that uses bike mechanics as a vehicle for outreach, engagement and mentoring. The students learnt how to strip down and rebuild bikes under the expert guidance of mechanic mentors Zeric and Pearl from Dismantle. The program, supported by Alkimos Beach development partners Lendlease and DevelopmentWA, challenged students to work in teams, problem-solve, communicate effectively and develop their kinaesthetic and work- ready skills. Students also travelled independently to the Dismantle Workshop in West Perth, for the second part of their work placement. We were very proud to help deliver such a great experience for the students. ALKIMOS BALL CLUB SEEKING SPONSORS Alkimos Ball Club Inc (Titans) are seeking to partner with local businesses for the upcoming season. The funds raised help to assist in facilitating a number of specialist programs, uniforms and equipment. With the continual growth of our club, we require major sponsors who are willing to support us over the coming years to be able secure a permanent home ground with the appropriate facilities and lighting which are currently underway in Butler and planned for Alkimos in the near future. If you know of a business that may be interested or are a business owner looking to support a community focused, not for profit, family orientated fledgling sporting group fostering Tee-ball and Baseball for all ages, please contact Justin or Loren at alkimosballclub@gmail.com or send us a DM us on Facebook for more information on our sponsorship proposals. ALWAYS WAS ALWAYSWILL BE 8-15 November 2020 We recognise our First Nations people have occupied and cared for this content for over 65,000 years.
