Alkimos Voice Winter 2020

ALKIMOS CITY CENTRE UPDATE With preparatory works underway on the rail corridor, Alkimos Central is on track. Across the 200 hectare development area, DevelopmentWA’s masterplan for Alkimos Central is proposed to include a true diversity of uses which in addition to major education and healthcare facilities, retail, business and industrial precincts and residential incorporates capacity for a 7 hectare site designated to community sports fields, a recreation centre and civic uses, that can accommodate an aquatic facility. The site’s scale and configuration is modelled on the hugely successful Cockburn ARC facility in DevelopmentWA’s Cockburn Central West project and is planned within 180 metres walk from the integrated bus and railway interchange located in the heart of the city centre. Planning by DevelopmentWA for Alkimos Central has been guided by the Alkimos-Eglinton District Structure Plan, State Sustainability Strategy, WA Planning Commission’s Liveable Neighbourhoods Policy and City of Wanneroo’s Smart Growth Strategy to ensure that as Alkimos Central develops it will play a pivotal role in overall employment generation and self-sufficiency in the northern suburbs of Perth, underpinning the development of a dynamic, prosperous and sustainable local economy in the Alkimos-Eglinton district. This work will prepare the rail corridor ahead of major construction work starting later this year. Early works contractor RJ Vincent started the preparatory work between Butler Station and Pipidinny Road. A significant amount of dumped rubbish (including a golf buggy and a selection of car parts) has been found and removed from the rail corridor. The team has been carefully collecting and storing topsoil from the site for use during revegetation of the area, once construction is complete. Work will also include fencing the rail corridor to prevent unauthorised entry. After the alignment has been cleared, bulk earthworks will begin and will see around 256,000m3 of fill (including sand, rock and limestone) removed to create the trench for the future rail line. Once extracted, the fill will be stockpiled near the future Alkimos Station, away from residents, before being re-used by the NEWest Alliance during major construction. The NEWest Alliance is currently working hard to confirm their final designs and construction plans for the project’s stations, noise mitigation measures and environmental considerations. Major construction will start later this year, with trains expected to be running on the line in 2022. OLD TREES, NEW ROOTS PART 2 Back in our Summer edition we mentioned that some existing trees on Graceful Boulevard, which needed to make way for the Marmion Ave roadworks, would be replanted down at Leatherback Boulevard. Good news, the move was a success and the trees are now in their new home amongst the beautiful Norfolk Pine trees, which were also rescued trees from another site. Reusing and replanting trees is another reason that makes Alkimos Beach a 6 Star Green Star Community. Trees are essential to providing food for local birds and helping to reduce the heat island effect and creating more shade for people’s wellbeing.
