Elliot Springs Voice Winter 2020

Winter is the perfect time to get out and explore the stunning scenery around us. Literally on our doorstep is Bindal Ridge, which features the Moongun walking trail (featured on our front cover - credit to Anna Brine). Moongun, which means ‘quoll’ in the native Bindal language, is a Class 3 dedicated walking trail, 4.2km return which takes about an hour round trip (at a general walking pace) to complete, with some steeper climb sections. There are plenty of rest stops along the way and once you get to the top you’re greeted with 360 degree views, taking in the coastline of Magnetic Island and Cape Cleveland. Future improvement works will include asphalt in sections as well as additional steps and erosion control measures. There are also plans for incorporating green mountain bike trails to cater for the growing mountain biking community in Townsville. Remember to bring your own water and wear closed-in shoes, the track has loose gravel and some uneven steps along the way. How to get there: For residents, access the track from Wadda Mooli Park. Alternatively if you’re visiting the area, parking is available at Wadda Mooli Park, in the Display Village or Townsville Visitor Information Centre’s car park. Townsville Hike and Explore If you’re looking for a group of like-minded adventurers, Townsville Hike and Explore run a Facebook group with regular bushwalking, camping and adventuring meets. They regularly hike the trails of Bindal Ridge and surrounding areas, exploring new places and experiencing first hand what the great outdoors has to offer. They are keen to welcome new members. The app uses GPS functionality built into smart phones to help a Triple Zero (000) caller provide critical location details required to mobilise emergency services. https://emergencyapp.triplezero.gov.au/ Recent Townsville Hike and Explore walking group The reward at the end Image credit: Townsville Hike and Explore
