Classic Wallabies kick off Summer of Rugby with Yarrabilba students Yarrabilba State Secondary College played host to the Classic Wallabies in October as a part of their Summer of Rugby clinics around the country. Classic Wallabies Lote Tuqiri, George Smith, Sam Cordingley and Lachie Turner were joined by current Queensland Reds players Harry Hoopert and Josh Nasser, as well as former Italian international Kris Burton to run clinics introducing students to the basics of rugby play. Drills encompassed passing, agility and kicking, with a special focus on team work and communication the order of the day. Despite having never been to Yarrabilba before, the Classic Wallabies cohort was left impressed with both the students and Yarrabilba Secondary’s fields and facilities. 63 Test veteran Lote Tuqiri was particularly impressed with the day out. “I’ve never been out here before, but there’s a lot more out here than I realised and the school is a great facility”, Tuqiri said. “What’s even better is that the kids have a thirst for knowledge about rugby. I’ve been running the catch and pass drills and it’s been great to see how quickly they have picked it up”. 111-cap Wallaby George Smith echoed the sentiment. “I reckon some of these kids are showing up the Wallabies with their kicking! But seriously, it’s really encouraging to see what a good community school is like, and we hope that these kids remember today and pick up a ball in future. The game is for everyone, and never be afraid to have a go and enjoy yourself”. Altogether 80 students, including participants from St. Clare’s, Yarrabilba State School and Yarrabilba State Secondary College took to the field for some expert instruction from seasoned professionals The Yarrabilba Bees are currently in the process of establishing their Committee.
