Life isn’t about reaching your destination; it’s about enjoying the journey.
There are ways to make sure your trip, whether by bike or car, goes
according to plan.
Bicycles
More people are riding bikes for recreation,
fitness and for their daily commute. Stay safe
by preparing properly before setting out.
Choose a good helmet and, if you are riding
at night, consider wearing reflective clothing.
zz
Head injuries cause most deaths from
bike accidents. When buying a helmet,
look for stickers or labels certifying that it
meets Australian Standards.
zz
Replace your helmet if it’s been in an
accident, been dropped on a hard surface
or you see any cracks in the foam.
zz
Maintain your bicycle and all equipment
in good condition. Specialised bike shops
can help you.
zz
Consider using cycleways, shared paths
and quieter streets for safer journeys.
zz
When using roads, ride in a predictable
manner so that other road users do
not have to react suddenly to your
movements. Obey the road rules,
including traffic lights and give way signs.
zz
When riding at night, by law your bike
must be fitted with lights at the front and
back. Seek advice on the correct lights
to use from your local police station,
specialist bike shops or your state’s roads
and traffic agency.
Scan the road when
cycling to spot dangers.
Motor vehicles
Fatigue can be fatal. At times, drivers simply
don’t realise they are getting too tired to drive
safely. Avoid accidents by taking regular
breaks, sharing the driving and eating well on
long trips. Getting an early start and driving
during the day, rather than the night, can also
help.
Look out for cyclists when driving. Cyclists
have the same rights and responsibilities as
drivers and motorcycle riders but sometimes
they can be harder to see. Give bicycle riders
a safe amount of space when overtaking.
Laws vary between states but most require
drivers to avoid cyclists by one metre when
travelling at 60 km per hour and 1.5 metres
when travelling faster.
