Heating appliances
Heaters such as radiators, slow combustion
and space heaters can be dangerous if
they are not used or maintained correctly,
causing burns and fires.
zz
Check storage tanks and bins on oil
heaters regularly for leaks. If detected,
shut off the supply and call a service
person.
zz
Oil-filled radiators should only be
operated for short periods, not all day.
zz
Regularly check the condition of outlets
on electric heaters and don’t overload
power points.
zz
Replace or repair damaged electrical
heaters that may have frayed cords,
cracked housing or broken plugs.
zz
Turn off electric heaters at the wall the
when you’re not using them or if you’re
leaving home.
zz
Make sure your electric or oil heaters
have adequate breathing space so they
don’t overheat.
zz
Be careful when you’re using electrical
heaters near wet areas like sinks and
bathrooms.
zz
Keep exhaust fans clean and free of lint
and dust.
zz
Make sure there is adequate ventilation in
your home.
“Don’t operate natural
gas heaters on any other
type of gas.”
“Don’t fill household
LPG cylinders with
automotive LPG.”
LPG contains an odorant that makes it readily detectable. If you smell gas and cannot find
an obvious cause, take the following steps:
• Turn off the gas at your gas meter or cylinder.
• Open all of your doors and windows to help with ventilation.
• Contact a licensed gas fitter to come and check out the problem.
zz
To check for gas leakage, spray soapy
water over any suspect connection or
hose and watch for bubbles. If in doubt,
turn off the gas and have a licenced gas
fitter attend. Never use a naked flame to
detect a leak.
