be counter-productive – even if a child
accidently receives a minor burn it can fail
to dampen their interest.

Be aware of your own modelling of fire
use. Casual use of a fire shows children
fire does not need to be taken seriously.

Encourage young children to tell an adult
if they find matches or cigarette lighters
and keep these items secure.

Watch for evidence of fire play such as
burns on bedding or clothing, or lighters
in pockets and stick to clear rules about
fire. Older children often overestimate
their ability to control fire and should
always be supervised.

Many children are fascinated by fire but this can become an unhealthy
obsession. Help your children understand the consequences of playing with
fire and know how to use fire safely.
