Yarrabilba Winter News 2020

Foundation staff and their Year 7 and 8 students at Yarrabilba State Secondary College have celebrated their official opening ceremony (COVID style). Principal Belinda Tregea said, “Yarrabilba Secondary College has been warmly welcomed by the local community since school commenced in Term 1 2020, and I feel privileged to be appointed to lead this new school.” “The staff and I are excited about ‘doing school differently’ to meet the needs of our diverse community and couldn’t be happier with our students’ engagement and achievement in such a short time.” Proving how ‘hands on’ the staff and students are at YSSC, they were delighted to be able to show off their recent planting blitz to the Education Minister Grace Grace, Logan MP Linus Power and Cr Laurie Koranski. With Planet Ark recently putting out the call to all Australians to help by planting one million new native trees and shrubs across the country, YSSC accepted the challenge and had every one of its foundation year students and staff members proudly plant a tree in July to mark National Tree Day – totalling 280 trees! Lendlease was proud to be able to support the college with plants, and our friendly ecologist from Natura- Pacific was happy to assist with advice on the most appropriate species for planting in each location. As a recipient of a Lendlease ‘New and Emerging Groups’ community grants earlier this year, they have been able to supply Yarrabilba State School with 337 brand new books of choice for their library. With some unexpected delays due to recent restrictions, all of the books have now been delivered (through March, May and June) ready for when the school reopened in Term 3. Head of Department (Curriculum), Rachel Pope was ecstatic saying “I just wanted to say a big thank you for all our wonderful books that we have recently received”.
