Sustainable Us - page 38

One of Australia’s oldest retirement villages, Buderim Gardens,
had some aged infrastructure. A huge upgrade of the water
system replaced valves, water mains, hydrants and connected
a ring main around the village. This upgrade reduced unseen
leaks, and Village Manager Antonio Peluso saw water
consumption drop by 20% as a result.
Residents were able to see the savings, as village management
reports water consumption to the resident’s committee every
month. It is then published in the resident’s newsletter along
with their helper ‘Watermeiser’– a character created to remind
residents what they can do to be more water wise.
Buderim Gardens Water Effıciency Program
To date, over 30% of our retirement villages are using rainwater to supply
village needs and to reduce the amount of fresh water we consume.
As part of the Lendlease Sustainability Framework we are targeting
a 20% reduction in water intensity.
The latest water initiative at the site includes
trialling water-saving showerheads.
