“I’m very impressed by the faithful level of detail given by Lendlease to the
restoration of this heritage site. Residents are now able to enjoy a wonderful building that
will play an important role in the ongoing life of this community.”
Maitland MP Robyn Parker
The property played a central role in the establishment of the
Anglican Diocese in the Hunter Valley region and was used as
a training location for clergymen and community members.
Originally built in the 1820s,
it has retained considerable
cultural, historic and social
significance for residents in
the local area.
Due to its age, the building
was starting to deteriorate and
required a number of upgrades.
Where replacement was the
only option, Lendlease supported its suppliers and contractors
through the process of using materials and methods from its
time of construction to maintain the heritage look and feel.
This collaboration delivered above and beyond the minimum
heritage requirements for restoration. The historical relevance
of the building has been retained and its use transformed
into a vibrant and interactive
community centre which resi-
dents use every day.
Residents meet in the restored
building for many activities
but the thoughtfully designed
separate areas have also pro-
vided another place to relax
and unwind.
Residents Carol and Brian Wilks said Morpeth House made
them “feel like they were living in a resort” and that the house
had become “the centre of activity.”
Maintaining a connection to local heritage and culture
was an important driver in the restoration of Morpeth House,
a historic building located within Closebourne Village.
